I picture you metaphorically slogging through a sun-blasted desert, then a gloomy swamp, then another scorched desert, until you finally arrived, parched, alligator-bitten, reparched, at this oasis.
Oasis?
Do I overstate? Of course. But it’s my site, so whatever.
Anyway, here you’ll find my books, guaranteed to refresh and delight the weary traveler. They include the first novels, Dog on Earth and The Spaces. Then the Ivy Jessup Mystery Series, including Pool of Blues, Slush Pile, Crooked Man, Boom, and The Secret of the Basement Books. Number 6 in the series is under construction.
Also here are the small, nonfiction Insomnia Series books, from 3 a.m. (The Measurements List) to 3:05 a.m. (Interesting Place Names) to 3:10 a.m. (The List of Everyday Stuff). Even if they don’t succeed in putting you to sleep, at least they’ll help some time pass (enjoyably).
Along the way there’s a children's book, The Beekeeper, the novel River of Memory, and Centennial Journal, the hundred-year story of North Fork Country Club in Cutchogue, NY. If any other club of any kind needs a milestone book created, you’ve found your man.
During a sabbatical, a journalist begins having thoughts filled with wisdom and knowledge. Since both of those qualities are well beyond his scope at this muddled point in his life, he believes the thoughts are coming from his dog, Elmo. The two then embark on a series of capers, investigating neighborhood mysteries while discussing topics including dogs, cats, sex, evolution, reincarnation and puddles. The first chapter was a winner in the L Magazine Literary Contest.

For passengers, a cruise ship is a floating pleasure dome. It’s something very different for a young man escaping the downslide of a would-be Nashville songwriter's life. Virtually shanghaied as a busboy, he survives to tell the tale and to one day inherit something precious, something threatened when his past collides with his present.

Event Horizon
The sixth in the Ivy Jessup Mystery Series begins with a truck crash and ends with international intrigue.
Centennial Journal
The hundred-year history of North Fork Country Club in Cutchogue, Long Island, New York, once my family's potato field.
It all began, as they say, in ninth grade, with the discovery of The Catcher in the Rye. I was a reader before that, but mostly Superman comics and The Guns of Navarone (four times). But Catcher put the thought in my head: I will be a writer.
And now it appears I am one.

Okay, he's written some books but how about songs? Why, yes there are a few and J.D.M. enjoys playing the guitar and covering a few.
He taught guitar to one young man who now makes his living as a working musician.
“Miller covers life’s existential questions, reflections, and musings through a comedic route – his dog. And, not only is this book fun and unique, the writing, dialogue, and prose is fantastic.”
“Joyful read.”
“Original, charming, profound.”want you to be a part of it.
“Highly original, sometimes hilarious, always moving.”
“Incredibly evocative narratives of several different times and places in the main character’s life, all written in clear, moving, effortless, and sometimes hilarious prose. (If you’ve thought you had no interest in ever being on a cruise ship, this book will make you see that you’re right.)”
“I twice have been lured back to re-read this marvelously multi-dimensional story.”
“Deftly written. The writer takes words in unexpected directions and creates scenes that had me laughing aloud. Just a great, fun read.”
“It’s a novel of suspense, and Miller keeps momentum on a boil, with plot twists corkscrewing throughout that even the most omnivorous mystery consumer will never see coming … And did I mention it’s funny?”
“Masterful performance.”
“Miller, a gifted storyteller, has written another BINGO. His mysteries have more twists and turns than Simone Biles at her best.”
Ivy’s “gyrations through Monday murders, tantalizing literary clues, and a panoply of possible suspects make Dorothy's ‘follow the yellow brick road’ seem like a gentle romp through the park.”
“Haven’t read a book in one day since I can remember. I did this one. Could not put it down.”
“There’s a surprising heap of heart and soul mixed in with all the murders in ‘Slush Pile.’ ”
“What a charming and unusual murder mystery the talented Mr. Miller has written and you can tell he plumbed some depths but also had fun doing it.”
“Where Ivy goes, trouble follows. So does adventure, heartache, and the enchanting prose of her creator, J.D. Miller that is as effortless and graceful as ever.”
“Getting into Ivy’s thoughts and feelings as she is overwhelmed and under-prepared has become his trademark. Even better is the clever, occasionally smartass, descriptions of subtle events that most of the rest of us simply miss.”
